KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam Review: Design and Build
The design of the KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam will probably not be of your taste if your aesthetic lies on the extravagant style. Though, if you’re a minimalist or someone who doesn’t care about aesthetics in general. You will be quite pleased.
The KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam like mentioned before is similar looking to an old fashioned compact digital camera, though much sleeker. The lens of the dash cam takes up the majority of the space on the left side of the front. The device has a button on top, just above the lens. And input for the GPS and USB connection is on another side. The mounting bracket connects to the center of dash cam and other end attaches to the windshield.
While the back of the camera is nothing but an LCD screen, yes, that is where you’ll be viewing all the footage. On the right side, there is a slot for the micro SD card and two navigation buttons that allow you to zoom in. The opposite side has another USB interface for connecting with computers and an OK button and a Manual button (M).
The user interface of the KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam is pretty basic, though, icon-heavy. Nothing high-tech, but it serves its purpose. I mean, the point of a dashcam is not customization, user intervention isn’t a key aspect for dash cams. Though it isn’t exactly easy to figure out either, then again, like most dashcams. It has the “leave it be” kind of mechanics.
The KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam comes with a suction cup mount with a locking mechanism, there are two options to choose from:
- One with a GPS module
- One without a GPS module
Whatever you decide to pick, that is up to you.
KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam Review: Video Quality
The KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam offers a considerably wide viewing angle and a superb video quality. It beats a lot of the other competitors in the market. You may want to change the default settings because the video becomes a tad bit overexposed and nobody wants that. There arises a problem because of the wide angle lens, it suffers from the fish-eye phenomenon, this problem can be handled by installing a fish-eye lens correction software.
There’s an option to adjust the quality settings too. The KDLINKS X1 dash cam also offers a great peripheral view. It’s all well and above the “satisfactory” threshold, considering the price tag of the dash cam. I’ve checked out plenty dash cams in my lifetime and I’ve seen the terrible quality at a much higher price. I wouldn’t call the KDLINKS X1 a steal but it’s definitely a smart purchase.
What one should keep in mind is that, at maximum quality settings, the dash cam can only record videos in a 5-minute time-frame. Each video is going to be 470 MBs, more or less. So, with a 32 GB SD card, you’re going to be getting a recording loop of 60 minutes.
KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam Review: Features
The KDLINKS X1 isn’t exactly meant to be an out of the box dash cam, though it still has some interesting features.
The primary purpose of the KDLINKS X1 is providing a solid recording experience and it does with its video running time. It’s one of the best in the game, even with its maximum resolution, it still gives you an hour of video recording. With a lower setting, you’re going to get even more running time. The camera setting at 780 pixels, on the 32 GB SD card, will give you nine hours of running time. That is much more than what I bargained for, to be honest.
The next feature is something that particularly enticed me, the “crash detection” feature. It essentially locks the recordings. So that in case of an accident, the video footage is not lost or deleted. It’s a very useful feature, especially for everyday use. This can potentially be a life saver.
The KDLINSK X1 dash cam has pretty high heat resistance, it’s something many people would overlook when looking to buy a dash cam. Don’t be one of those people. The X1 can take up to 160°F and function at a temperature as low as -40°F.
It also has an auto record function that starts recording as soon as the car starts, pretty neat huh? The KDLINKS X1 dash cam has a USB port for both charging and for transferring the video footage, so you’re free of the SD card reader hassle. Bonus, it can also work as a webcam, if connected to a computer. It’s a simple dash cam with simple but amazing features.
KDLINKS X1 Dash Cam Review: Price Tag
The KDLINKS X1 dash cam is pretty affordable, the price at Review time is $169.95, considering all the awesome features it has to offer. There are dash cams available, starting out at $25 but believe me when I say, “You get what you pay for.” Another thing to keep in mind is that there are dash cams that go all the way up to $300 but do not come close to the convenience and level of performance of the KDLINKS X1.
Alright, ladies and gentlemen, now that we have made it this far into the review. I’m going to be giving you my final thoughts about the X1, not that I haven’t made it obvious but let’s make it crystal.
This dash cam has surprised me, and it has proven its worth. It, without question, is high in demand for a reason. The size, the compact design, the video quality both day and night time its all amazing. It does not end there, for someone who doesn’t want to venture the high-end seas. The KDLINKS X1 dash cam delivers a premium experience for less.
Also, this dash cam could save your life, if not anything else, the “crash detection” feature has me sold. The auto-recording and in-built GPS aren’t things you’re going to find in any other dash cam. It is an Amazon favorite because of its durability, cost-effective and user-friendly features. I definitely recommend this, it’s just one of those purchases that seem too good to be true.
Their customer services are also super responsive, they actually take care of your queries and possible technical issues. The KDLINKS X1 is a take on the classic dash cam, but then it has been refined to the best I could be! I think the X1 deserves a 4.3 out of 5 stars.
